Northeastern University - Institutional Master Plan

My understanding was that the City was very focused on ensuring that universities are no longer expanding on the other parts of the city that they are not currently in. It seems like NEU lost the memo.
840 Columbus is on the Northeastern campus. The city has refused to let Northeastern build a dorm there. As DZH22 said, the university then went looking for an alternative.

Northeastern Facebook page shared photos of EXP this morning with the caption, “Get an exclusive look inside EXP, our new 357,000-square-foot facility that is close to completion.”

And in other Northeastern-related news, it was confirmed this week that the university’s acceptance rate has dropped to a record low 5.6%. The transformation this school has gone through the last generation is incredible.

The building is looking great but it does seem weird that they chose to fill the photos with fairly middle aged men rather than the more mixed group of people who will be using the building.

There are few students on campus this week. Students move in end of next week.

Of course, but as someone who was involved in taking photos of architecture projects, we would always round up appropriate bodies--interns, people working for the construction team, whoever was around.

Northeastern is extending its current IMP by 2 years to more easily facilitate the approval of 840 Columbus, and will delay submitting a new IMP until the project is approved.

Northeastern respectfully submits this IMPNF and asks that the BPDA Board approve the 2013
IMP for an additional two-year term, waiving further review in accordance with Sections 80D-
5.2(e) and 80D-6 of the Code. The requested two-year renewal will enable Northeastern
University to complete the review and approval for its Third Amendment under its current IMP
prior to seeking a new 10-year IMP. Such approval would fulfill Northeastern’s obligation to build
1,000 new student beds under its existing IMP. Following approval of the Third Amendment to
the IMP for the mixed-use building at 840 Columbus Avenue, and prior to the expiration of the
two-year renewal period, a full 10-year IMP will be prepared and submitted.

‘Reaching the end of its useful life’: As Historic Matthews Arena faces foundational issues, Northeastern weighs new arena

I still have to get to a game at Matthews. It would be a shame to lose the building, it's as historic a sports venue as we get in the US. But, if the conditions are as bad as the article lays out, I guess there's not much choice.

There isn’t much left. I haven’t been to a game there in twenty years, but it was in rough shape even in the early 00’s. Yeah, the history and quirkiness of Matthews is great. Just not at the expense of public safety.

I hate it when they reward slum lords. Instead of tearing it down they should restore the original front. Northeaster used the same excuse when they tore down the opera house. As far as the consulting firm they hired don't forget a consultant job is to draw rings around a bull's eye

Yeah, it would be sad to see it go.
If they can, I hope they can keep that arched entrance. It still has pieces of the original, elaborate façade.

Read the article - -it's not just the building:

"....After surveying the Matthews Arena lot, Haley & Aldrich reported concentrations of lead, asbestos and other toxic chemicals within the soil. In accordance with state laws regarding hazardous waste, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection released plans to completely uproot the parking lot bordering Gainsborough Street by removing 5,000 cubic yards of soil from the site.

The land that Matthews Arena sits on was once part of Boston’s original wharf, with the west side existing as shoreline and the east bordering the ocean. Although it was replaced with man-made land in the late 19th century as part of a larger effort to fill in the 200-year-old Mill Pond that once existed in what’s now Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood, it left behind high concentrations of clay, which expands when wet and contracts when dry, and surface-level sand, which shifts easily and can be damaging to adjacent structures.

Deep under the lot, bedrock provides a sturdy base, but it has weathered over time, no longer up to its usual caliber. Furthermore, row houses stood tall on that block, along the coast, in the mid-1800s. Their destruction left behind debris, including brick, glass, porcelain and chrysotile asbestos, prompting the need for a speedy removal today....."

Letter of intent has been filed to the BPDA for Matthews demolition.

Something I noticed in this letter is it mentioned multi-purpose turf - an element not currently found at Matthews and only at Cabot. Can't help but wonder if this will carry over some elements from the 2012 IMP to the 2024 IMP, with all athletics being centralized near the site of Matthews, and Cabot becoming some combination of new academic and/or residential buildings.

If they're trying to stuff all of that into the block that Matthews currently sits on, I have to assume they're going to downsize capacity of the rink to make it fit. Does Northeastern ever draw the close to 5,000 the current rink holds?
